Welcome to the KSOP - Karlsruhe School of Optics & Photonics

Multidisciplinary environment for first-class research, education, and innovation.

The terms optics & photonics are derived from the Greek optikós, referring to vision and photon which means light. Hence, the areas of optics & photonics cover the research relating to light, including its use in many modern industries.

Optics & photonics are key technologies of the 21st century and are the basis of today’s

  • optical communications;
  • environmental sensing;
  • biomedical diagnostics in life sciences;
  • energy-efficient lighting;
  • solar energy harvesting;

The Karlsruhe School of Optics & Photonics (KSOP) offers a Master and a Doctoral program and conducts first-class research in five areas:

As part of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), one of Europe’s most prestigious technical universities, KSOP offers programs of extraordinary quality, which was confirmed by the Excellence Initiative, a Germany-wide competition of universities launched by the Federal Ministry of Education to support outstanding research at the country’s best institutions of higher education. This high quality of research is passed down to those who chose to study at KSOP. Our students become invaluable members of the scientific community as well as priceless assets for industry. The MSc and PhD programs of KSOP cover the full range of graduate education and create the prerequisites for an interesting and successful career in the field of optics. The school is supported by the German Optics & Photonics Industry and the State of Baden-Württemberg and also offers a European Erasmus Mundus program for both MSc and PhD students.
