DFG: Bright Perspectives

Optical technologies and systems are a constant part of our everyday life. The German optics and photonics industry holds internationally a leading position. Nevertheless, these technologies are not properly covered by traditional programs. At KSOP, the Karlsruhe School of Optics & Photonics, graduates of natural or engineering sciences are perfectly prepared for the growing optics and photonics market by the KSOP M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs. The graduate school is attracting young international academics. KSOP Ph.D. students are converting a usual middle-class car into a “cognitive automobile” that detects the environment by optical sensor systems and reacts to traffic autonomously. They manipulate light propagation by artificial nanostructures and thus create the basics for future applications in optical information processing. Using biophotonic methods they investigate how nerve cells connect in the human brain. KSOP aims on becoming one of the leading research and education centers for Optics & Photonics in Europe.
